CHILE: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL TO DELIVER PETITION CALLING FOR AUTHORITIES TO PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS IN PETORCA

MODATIMA is working to draw public attention to the impact of illegal water extraction water on rural communities in Petorca, a region that has been seriously impacted by water scarcity. As a result of their work, members such as Mundaca and Vilches have received recurrent death threats in recent years


On Thursday 7 June, Amnesty International will deliver a petition with thousands of signatures from supporters all over the world to the regional attorney general in Valparaíso, calling for the Chilean authorities to provide effective measures for the protection of the human rights defenders Rodrigo Mundaca, Verónica Vilches, and other members of the Defence Movement of Earth, Environmental Protection and Access to Water (MODATIMA).

After delivering the petition, Amnesty International will hold a press conference at 12:00pm local time outside the regional attorney general’s office at Blanco 937, Edificio Tecno Pacifico, Valparaíso.

A member and spokesperson of MODATIMA in Chile’s central Petorca Province, Rodrigo Mundaca has been featured in Amnesty International’s global Brave campaign to strengthen the recognition and protection of human rights defenders around the world.
