After the Nicaraguan government’s decision to prohibit the Organization of American States Commission from entering the country, it’s clear that the Daniel Ortega administration is continuing with a strategy to avoid international scrutiny in an attempt to evade responsibility

In the context of the 173rd Period of Sessions of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Amnesty International held meetings with diplomatic representatives of Organization of American States (OAS) member states about Nicaragua and the Working Group on Nicaragua. Belissa Guerrero, Amnesty International’s advocacy coordinator for the Americas, said:

“After the Nicaraguan government’s decision to prohibit the Organization of American States Commission from entering the country, it’s clear that the Daniel Ortega administration is continuing with a strategy to avoid international scrutiny in an attempt to evade responsibility. It is unreasonable that the Commission and the victims have to meet outside the country due to the Nicaraguan government’s refusal to let them in. OAS member states must respond firmly to this situation that threatens human rights and regional institutions.”

 “During this visit, Amnesty International asked OAS member states not to be complicit in the serious human rights violations committed by the Nicaraguan authorities and to utilize all necessary means to support the victims and prevent new human rights violations.”
